The Virtual Coupling” at the Eastern Testing Ground: Achieved Effects and Development Directions

Abstract

The results of the work on the implementation of the innovative technology of interval train control called “virtual coupling” are presented. The technical and technological solutions and hardware-software tools that allow to implement train traffic with minimum intervals using the VС system via a digital radio channel and intelligent “automatic driving” systems while ensuring compliance with traffic safety requirements are considered. The results of testing and controlled operation of implemented technologies at the Eastern Testing Ground of the JSC “Russian Railways” network during the period 2019-2023 are presented, as well as the socio-economic effects achieved during this period. The conclusion is drawn about the prospects of using knowledge-intensive technical and technological solutions such as “virtual coupling” to increase the capacity of railways on existing infrastructure.
